From Jennifer Bennett: I've taught in China the past two
summers. Camp has been the most challenging and rewarding
experience. It's A LOT of work, but the rewards make it all
worthwhile. Camp usually starts 9 a.m. You teach your class
until 12:00 (with 2 or 3 short breaks) and then go to lunch
until around 2:30. From 2:30-4:00 there are activities.
You choose something to teach that week (crafts, science, music,
dance, etc) and every day of that week you will have another
teacher's class (a good way to get to know new students and
teach the same lesson for one week...less preparation!) From
4:00-4:30 is snack (break). From 4:30-6:00 you have your class
again. Sometimes you get lucky and can take the kids swimming
or to computers...basketball, etc. Sometimes you just teach
again or work on your class flag, class song, read a story,
prepare for your class presentation. 6:00-8:00 is dinner/time
off. From 8:00-9:00 p.m. class again. Sometimes they have a
movie, story time. Creative ideas come in handy at this time
because the kids (and you) will be tired or wound up from the
day's work. It takes a lot of energy to do all of this, but
it's really fun if you are into it. Usually the other teachers
are a lot of fun and traveling to a foreign country is quite a
shock (toilets, etc) but the overall experience is one you will
never forget. Your students will love you forever. It can
really change your life. I get really attached. :) |
